Tourists in Mexico discover body on Acapulco beach

Beachgoers taking in the sun at a Mexican vacation spot were shocked by the sight of a corpse washing ashore Sunday.
The body was floating in the waters near Acapulco at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday as tourists looked on from under the shade of canopies.
Images posted to Facebook by police in the Guerrero state showed first responders clad in assault gear combing rocks around the chair-lined shore of Caletilla Beach.
A 33-year-old suspect identified as “José Luis,” who had a .22-caliber gun on him, was later arrested for shooting the unnamed victim, cops said in the Facebook post.
The suspect told police both he and the victim were fishermen who’d been fighting over a drug deal, authorities said.
He claimed to have shot him near the resort when the scuffle got heated, cops said in the post.
The killing is just the latest in a spike in drug-related killings in Mexico, particularly in the once tourist-heavy Acapulco.
The tense situation has ballooned the murder rate in the region, Reuters noted. Mexico reported more than 29,168 murders in 2017, which was the highest since the government started keeping records 20 years earlier.
Two people died — including a gunman who had a heart attack amid a firefight with police — during an Acapulco car robbery on March 30, Reuters reported.
The shooting occurred on Good Friday — a Roman Catholic holy day ahead of Easter — and spooked dozens of people reenacting the crucifixion of Christ.
