The Senate confirmed Mike Pompeo as President Trump's next secretary of state on Thursday in a vote that split the chamber largely along party lines.
Pompeo was approved 57-42, with a handful of Democrats facing tough reelection races voting for the current CIA director to run the State Department.
Trump nominated Pompeo to replace Rex Tillerson as his top diplomat ahead of a potentially historic sit-down between the President and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Pompeo has taken the lead on the planning and negotiations between the two countries in recent weeks and met with Kim.
Trump said Thursday that Kim and Pompeo met for over an hour.
"It was more than hello. They got along," Trump told the hosts of "Fox & Friends" in a phone interview. "They spoke, and (Pompeo) also spoke with his counterparts in North Korea. They had a great meeting. He then left. It was very, very secret. Very, very quiet."
Pompeo's hawkish views and anti-LGBT record left many liberal-leaning lawmakers upset over his nomination.
"I voted against Pompeo because we need a secretary of state who'll check Trump's bellicose nature, not encourage it," Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) tweeted. "After 15+ years of war in Afghanistan and Iraq, we need someone who will bring nations together in diplomatic efforts, not someone who supports never-ending wars."
Republicans argue that Pompeo's close ties to the President will help build morale in a hollowed-out State Department.
Pompeo, a Tea Party Republican who represented Kansas in Congress for less than a decade, was approved 66-32 by the Senate last year before becoming CIA director.
