A 5-month-old boy died after his family ran a red light and crashed their van into another vehicle in their haste to get the ailing child to a Staten Island hospital early Saturday, police said.
The drama began when little Damaris Earps’ mother found him unresponsive in their home around 2:30 a.m. cops said.
The mom and a 36-year-old female relative loaded the boy into a 2003 Chevy Astro and raced off towards a local emergency room.
Little Damaris had suffered from flu-like symptoms for the past two weeks, police said.
As the 39-year-old mother attempted to revive her son, the van driver blew through a red light on Forest Ave. in West Brighton and was struck in the intersection by a 2008 Jeep Liberty headed north on Broadway around 2:45 a.m., according to authorities.
Medics rushed little Damaris to Richmond University Medical Center, where he died.
The boy's mother and relative were unhurt in the crash. The 28-year-old woman driving the Jeep and her three passengers were also uninjured, officials said.
It was not immediately clear if the boy was killed by the collision or from the medical episode prior to the crash, cops said.
The city medical examiner will determine the child's cause of death.
Nobody was immediately facing charges in the crash as cops continue to investigate.
