Kim Jong Un unexpectedly met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Wednesday, marking the North Korean dictator's first foreign trip since taking power in 2011.
The two Communist leaders met during an "unofficial visit" in Beijing, Chinese government officials said. They held talks at the Great Hall of the People and also watched an art performance together, accoding to the Chinese officials.
It was not immediately known what Kim and Xi discussed.
The high-profile sit-down comes weeks after President Trump announced that he will meet with Kim this spring, breaking with decades of U.S. policy and becoming the first American commander-in-chief to sit down with a North Korean leader.
Kim's unofficial visit to China also comes as fears of a full-on trade war between China and the U.S. are escalating worldwide.

Trump sent stocks tumbling after he slapped China with $60 billion worth of trade sanctions last week, including import tariffs that could lead to serious financial burdens for average American consumers.
China ominously responded that it would take "all means necessary" to defend itself against Trump's tariffs.

Suspicion that Kim had arrived in Beijing swirled Monday after a mysterious North Korean train rolled into the city's main station under tight security.
Kim's father, late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, visited China several times during his rule, lastly in May 2011, months before his death.

Past visits by Kim Jong Il to China were surrounded in secrecy, with Beijing only confirming his presence after he had crossed the border by train back into North Korea.
